The nerds at Caltech have done it again! Another brilliant breakthrough discovery created to save mankind from disease and devastation but it will most likely be used as a peeping tom's favorite piece of equipment.
The "microscopic microscope" is a total reinvention of the microscopes we know today. About the size of a dime, the microscope was built with microfluidics and sensors in place of lenses - a thing of the past.
Assistant professor of electrical engineering and bioengineering and creator Changhuei Yang said their research "is motivated by the fact that microscopes have been around since the 16th century, and yet their basic design has undergone very little change and has proven prohibitively expensive to miniaturise. Our new design operates on a different principle and allows us to do away with lenses and bulky optical elements."
The developers of the mini micro have high hopes for their baby. Being able to mass-produce this new fit-on-your-fingertip microscope, the creators are sure that it will eventually become a medical breakthrough having the ability to be implanted into the human body to scout for and monitor diseases.
What can it be immediately used for? If you have a hot neighbor - this device is tailor-made for you! Oh, it has a multitude of purposes of course, creepy ones that is. If the developers add some adhesive to the back, it can easily be turned into a spy lens - conveniently compact enough to fit on eyeglasses, walls, shirt collars, etc.
