Your ramen noodle-Campbell’s-Cup of Soup diet rotation could soon be coming to an end.

As part of a hearing that began today, the FDA is considering pleas from consumer groups who say the government should regulate sodium in processed foods.

On a technical level, the move would switch salt’s classification from “GRAS” – a food Generally Recognized as Safe – to a food additive, which the FDA is allowed to regulate.

For your pantry, that means the flavor and sodium content of some staples – canned soup restaurant meals and cereal – could be directly impacted

So, if you like the sodium-sugar ratio in your ramen noodles and Mountain Dew to be about equal, stock up on those oriental beef ramen packets now. Or pray that you’ll get a sweet enough post-graduation gig to graduate from the processed-food aisle of Wal-Mart.
