Berkeley Takes to the Streets After Obama Win

UC Berkeley was the most elated campus on the West Coast Tuesday night. According to one student, the police shutdown the cities main street, Telegraph, and thousands of students walked from campus to neighboring Oakland, chanting as they walked, “YES WE CAN!”

This was one of the most historical events in Berkeley’s wild history and for many it meant a lot more than just students going nuts in the streets.

S.F. Chronicle:

In Berkeley, about 300 students celebrated at the intersection of Durant and Telegraph avenues. Around midnight, some of them climbed lampposts, hung American flags and chanted "USA!"

Others sipped Champagne and set off fireworks.

Nearby stood Ilka Hartmann, 66, a photographer who lives in Bolinas, who had come to spend election night with her friend Brenda Savage, also 66, who lives in Berkeley.

They had met in Berkeley in 1968, a year in which anti-war protests mounted and King was assassinated.

"And now," said Valerie Savage, 44, Brenda's daughter, "they've come back for the realization of his dream."

This was truly a beautiful moment to be a student in America.
