Fire Storms Through Westmont College, Does Not Reach UC Santa Barbara

Flames ran through the city of Montecito on Thursday night, taking out more than 100 homes and forcing 90% of Westmont College's faculty and students to evacuate. Montecito is located in Santa Barbara County and is  well known for the celebrity homes scattered along the coastal city.

But Thursdays fire took the attention  off the celebrities and put it on the victims.

L.A. Times:

The fire, which started Thursday night in a historic structure called the Tea House above Mountain Drive in Montecito, has continued to burn west through a hilltop community known as the Riviera. The community is known for its wealthy view homes.

At least 10 homes on Westmont Road were lost to the fire, many of them housing faculty of Westmont College in Montecito. The fire destroyed two to four of Westmont's residential buildings and at least 14 of 41 on-campus  faculty homes, said college spokesman Scott Craig. The fire also consumed a physics building and Bauder Hall, a century-old carriage house that had been converted into a psychology building, Craig said.

UC Santa Barbara is 14 miles up the coast and was not affected by the fire.
