University of Florida Profs Join Other Acadmics In Saying Shut Up Palin And Leave Bill Ayers Alone

While Sarah Palin is accusing Obama of “pallin’ around with terrorists” when it comes to his (tenuous) connection to William Ayers, not everyone is so anti-Billy. About 3,200 academics, primarily college professors, have signed a statement in support of Bill Ayers.

The signees, which includes four scholars associated with the University of Florida, oppose what they see as the demonization of Ayers by the McCain campaign. Ayers, a tenured professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, has gotten a bad rap for being a founding member of Weather Underground in the 60s and 70s. The Weather Underground protested the Vietnman War, and at times bombed key governmental institutions. The domestic bombings earned Ayers the connection to terrorism.

But, as The Alligator reports, not everyone views it that way:

Linda Jones, a UF associate professor in the College of Education, sees him as a leader in her field.

Jones said calling Ayers a terrorist is an unfounded assassination of his character.

She said she was irked by a clip she saw of Palin on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” where the vice presidential candidate implied that Ayers was a terrorist.

Jones said Ayers’ actions during the war were wrong but must be looked at in context.

“Friends of ours were getting drafted and dying,” Jones said. “It was not a pretty time to be at school.”

Other academics, though, are bothered by Ayers lack of remorse over his actions. They feel his academic accomplishments cannot negate the bombings in his past.

I guess in the Ayers situation, one man’s activism is another man’s terrorism.
