What Not To Do At A Guest Speaker Lecture At UNC

Lately, professors have been piling on the required guest speaker lectures.  We all know how to sit nicely and listen to a lecture, but it seems that when the Q & A portion of the lecture rolls around, UNC students freeze up a bit...and sometimes make themselves look pretty stupid in front of their peers.  Here are a five things not to do during the Q & A:

  • Do not decide you want to ask a question before you have thought of a question to ask.  I'm sure your voice is lovely, and I understand that you want everyone to hear you speak, but no one wants to listen to "Um...yea...so..."
  • Do not start your question by telling the speaker "I would like to challenge you."  They are an expert in their field, while you, most likely, are not.  It's one thing to say that you disagree with some of their points, but if you are really going to try and challenge them, be prepared to have your argument ripped to shreds.
  • Do not spend five minutes talking about your views on the subject.  When you are the guest speaker, you can spend as long as you would like giving your views, but for now, remember that there are other people in the audience.
  • Do not make blatantly ignorant comments.  If you did not pay attention to anything the speaker said, maybe you shouldn't be asking a question.
  • Do not interrupt the speaker when they are answering your question.  They are answering your question.  The two of you are not having a debate.
