90210 Is Back For The Better Or For The Way Way Worse

College students will be feeling yet another blast-from-our-pop-culture-past tonight when the new 90210 premieres on the CW.

Most of us are probably too young to remember the original in its heyday, but at least now you have a second chance. This time, we follow the Wilsons, who have come to California from Kansas. (Note the obvious “We’re not in Kansas anymore” joke.) Siblings Annie and Dixon head to West Beverly Hills High where their dad just happens to end up as the principal. But the more interesting faculty members are Jennie Garth and Shannen Doherty returning to their former roles but all grown up as a guidance counselor and theater teacher.

So will the new series bring us back to those awkward, lusty times of high school with the squabbles and the sex (rumor has it there’s a blow job in the first episode! Scandalous!)? Or will it just be a lackluster tease?

The Chicago Sun-Times gives us a little idea:

Viewers will have to decide for themselves when the new ''90210'' has its two-hour premiere tonight on WGN-Channel 9. The CW network refused to make any episodes available in advance for review, which is widely seen as a sign that the show will be a disappointment.

Uh oh. This doesn’t sound promising. Particularly for a show who's tagline is “If you want to live in the zip, you’ve got to live by the code.”

Appropriately skeptical, the article asks, “Reviving ''Beverly Hills, 90210'': Genius move or last-ditch measure by a low-rated, desperate network?”

For a network that still insists on keeping One Tree Hill on the air, the answer can’t be good.
