We know you’re all out of school, but we’re going to attempt to keep you abreast on UCLA news this summer with a new feature. Similar to Fresh Cream, Ripe Produce will feature local LA news that’s “ripe for the reading.” Here are five summer stories you must know.
* Smog in Los Angeles is nothing new. It's one of the few cities where you can find Smog Testing Stations. Unfortunately, the effects of smoke and sulfur dioxide have now taken a toll on local athletes. One solution: Carpool, people.
* UCLA fans welcome back to LA former Bruins basketball player Baron Davis. Watch out for BD in a red, white & blue Clippers jersey at the Staples Center this Fall.
* UCLA alum Jessica Cosby secured a spot to Beijing after winning the hammer throw at the U.S. Olympic trials. Not only did she place first, she set a record of 232 feet (70.72 meters)! Here's a list of more UCLA Olympians.
* Canyon News celebrates the continuous success of the UCLA basketball program despite losing 3 key players to the NBA Draft.
* Westwood not only breeds professional basketball players, but baseball players as well. Senior Alden Carrithers was selected in the Major League Baseball Draft by the Detroit Tigers this year.
