Uncertain Undie Run Has UCLA Students Nervous

Utterly unacceptable.

That's the view of a majority of UCLA students in response to the administration questioning the future of the quarterly event. In an article in the Daily Bruin today, the questions of finances and safety may cause the university to 'cancel' the event.

But cancelling the event is nearly impossible, since UCLA students seem very dedicated to keeping the tradition alive. Undie Run began in 2002 in response to the administration disallowing Midnight Yell, a tradition where students would scream in unison at midnights during finals week. Now, instead of screaming, students strip and run through campus, only to end up in the drained Shapiro Fountain in Royce Quad.

Even if the university claims the event is unsafe and too expensive, it seems that students will still participate as they did before the university decided to sanction it. It would be rather difficult to wrangle up to 7,000 drunk and nearly naked students with the limtied security afforded by UCPD.

So the withdrawn university support of Undie Run is an unfortunate (and a minor) inconvenience to the students who feel that Undie Run is the pinnacle of their existence during the dire days of finals.
