Even though Olympic athletes are the cool kids on the block these days, they still geek out over their favorite celebrities.
Check out the star inspirations behind this summer’s Olympic greatness:
Nicole Kidman pushed the Australian men’s sailing team to gold
The Australian actress sent her countrymen luck when she called them before their big race. Malcolm Page says he originally screened the call from an unknown number, but when he realized who was on the other end he quickly called back. Page and fellow sailor Nathan Wilmot named their boat The Australian after Kidman’s upcoming movie.
LeBron James and Kobe Bryant’s appearance assured Jason Lezak the win
Lezak, who stunned in the 400-meter freestyle relay, is a huge basketball fan. So when LeBron James and Kobe Bryant showed up at his meet, the swimmer said he could not fail. Fortunately, the inspiration worked and UCSB alum Lezak helped Phelps reach that last, epic gold medal.
Jason Kidd paid a visit to his biggest fan: Misty May-Treanor
May-Treanor wore Kidd’s No. 5 when she played basketball and she even has a Roman numeral “V” tattooed on her back. If that isn’t obsession, what is? The basketball player graciously repaid the admiration by cheering on May-Treanor at a volleyball match during the Games.
Lil Wayne was the voice behind Michael Phelp’s historic success
What does it take to pump up the nation’s world’s universe’s best swimmer? Just a little Lil Wayne on the iPod will do. Phelps told The Today Show that Wayne’s song “I’m Me” is all it takes to get him in the win zone. Some particularly inspirational lyrics include: “Ain't nobody f***in' wit me, man, and you already know that... F**k up my dreams; somebody gon' die tonight!"
