Wherefore Art Thou, TheSpark.com?
In the early 2000s, a bunch of recent Harvard math grads authored the Web's most popular personality tests. Literally. Nearly 8 million high school and college students took their Death Test at TheSpark.com. The site no longer exists -- but we know where you can still find out what will kill you (if the drugs and drink don't, obvs).

Try to remember back to 1999. Jackass was still new, the Web was not yet clogged with the likes of failing Web video companies and TheSpark.com founders Chris Coyne, Eli Bolotin, Sam Yagan, Max Krohn and Christian Rudder were paving the way for sites like College Humor to clean up ten years later.

The site was comprised of a few set features: the uber-popular quizzes; Spark Notes, a snarky take on old Cliff; self-explanatory Science Projects, such as the Fat Project, Stinky Meat and Date My Sister; and PimpinCupid, a pre-Web dating matching service wherein you'd entrust these guys with your e-mail address, and that of your crush.

TheSpark was named Maxim's best site of 2000; millions visited to take the Purity, Slut and Death Tests. But the success of SparkNotes (thank you for getting me through 11th grade English) actually meant a death knell for all the amazing Spark content. After the dudes sold Spark Notes to Barnes and Noble in 2001, the behemoth book publisher kept the quizzes and projects and fun stuff around for a while... But in 2004, the site officially died (and like an ugly phoenix from its ashes rose the B&N glossy TheSpark approximation, with overwhelming but inferior quizzery).

However, all was not lost! That same year, TheSpark guys teamed up again to create PimpinCupid for Web 1.5 -- thus, OkCupid.com was born. Do not fear the Web dating aspect: they have the best quizzes on the Internet, including the original Slut and Death Tests, plus new additions like Politics. (They even have a platform for user-written tests.) Because, as Coyne and Rudder say, "if you can't trust Harvard grads to tell you who's a slut, who can you trust?"
