Earlier this month, Dubya spoke to the graduating seniors at Kansas' Greensburg High School on the one-year anniversary of a tornado destroying much of the town. Some choice Bushiness that I imagine was written on a tiny Air Force One napkin: "The tornado tore apart the beams and boards that held your houses together, but it could not break the bonds of family and faith that hold your town together." Cue: awww.
The school actually moved the graduation up a week so that Bush could make it -- his daughter Jenna (the cute twin) was getting married the week after. Classy!
Next the president is scheduled to speak at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs on May 28 and at Furman University on May 31. This probably seemed to administration officials like a dream set-up between Bush's two favorites, military and religion. Especially after last year's controversial visit to St. Vincent College...
But some Furman students and faculty aren't so pleased with Bush's visit. Over 200 so far have signed a petition on the school's Web site outlining their objections. They cite the war in Iraq and the administrations "obstructing progress on reducing greenhouse gases while favoring billions in tax breaks and subsidies to oil companies that are earning record profits."
In response, the school is setting up a short lecture series on President Bush's policies before Dubya rolls into town. But the debate still rages -- check out the several pages of nasty comments on the Greenville Web site.
