Streaking has been a tradition at colleges for decades and our generation holds up Frank the Tank as the mascot for these activities.
And why not? What’s not to like about the stray hot blond chick running across the football field? (Though let’s be honest, it’s more often a less-than-hot drunk guy). But some schools’ students have gone above and beyond in embracing their nakedness and made it an organized event, sometimes to the disgust of the administration, but always to the joy of fellow students.
Check out the Top 10 Organized College Streakings and keep your hands above the desk:
It may not be a large gathering, but naked students are naked students. The Jack Myton Run at the University of Minnesota only draws a few willing to go nude, but the tradition carries on. On the first day of classes after spring break, a group of friends that know a descendant of Jack Myton (a notorious streaker in 19th century England) streak across the Northrop Mall area.
9. Harvard
With all the studying that goes on there, you can imagine there’s a lot of pent up tensions at Harvard. So to relieve said tension students participate in the Primal Scream, running two laps around Harvard Yard naked the last night before final exams. It’s still Harvard though, so things can get a little weird, with some students dressing in capes, masks, or top hats.
Remember when you were a kid and liked to run around in the rain? Well imagine that but butt naked and you’ve got UC Santa Cruz’s First Rain. The annual event involves students running around in the nude during the first rainfall of the school year (provided the rain falls sometime between 6pm and 10pm).
7. Penn State
Popular enough to make it onto UrbanDictionary.com, the Mifflin Streak is a bi-annual tradition taking place the Sunday night before finals. More than 1,000 students turn out, but most come to observe rather than take it all off. Still about a dozen brave students strip and run down Mifflin road, often dodging police along the way.
6. Lawrence University
Every year a senior streak takes place right after a school sanctioned senior dinner. However, after alcohol and sexual harassment sent one streak out of control, the administration sought to rein things in a little. In response, students organized an “all campus” streek to protest the anti-streaking policy. Genius! Though, upon closer examination, the administration never really tried to cancel the streak in the first place, just recommend people drink less and disassociated the university with the event.
5. Tufts
Once called the Naked Quad Run, the Tufts administration has recently redesignated the naked dash around the Rez Quad as the Nighttime Quad Reception. The change came in response to injuries during previous years of unsanctioned nudity, when the event was unsanctioned. A controversy erupted in 2007 when the Somerville Journal published photos of the nude fest, understandably upsetting some of the participants.
4. Cal Poly
Streaking doesn’t have to be just boobs for the sake of boobs though. At Cal Poly, students take part in the Streak Hathway event which raises money for, you guessed it, breast cancer research. The founders decided there were really only two options for beneficiaries and well testicular cancer was just a little too blatant.
3. Swarthmore
Cash in exchange for nudity sounds a little like strip club shenanigans but the rugbdy team at Swarthmore doesn’t seem to mind. During the Dash for Cash once a semester, team members run or walk through Parrish Hall, while onlookers hand them cash. Did I mention that in addition to students, faculty and parents come out to support the bare athletes? Oh yeah.
If nakedness were a sport, then Hamilton College would be its champions… mostly because they treat it as a sport. The varsity streaking team competes against other schools and usually comes out on top, with the most streakers. The team even went on a five-day tour to 12 colleges in the New England Small College Athletic Conference, obviously ending up undefeated.
1. Dartmouth
Dartmouth is a college just full of exhibitionist as the school has not one, but two streaking traditions. First is streaking the Green, which is I think you can figure out for yourself. The other though, is Ledyard Challenge, which is a bi-state, bi-sport event. Since streaking is illegal in new Hampshire, but a-okay with the law in Vermont, students swim across the Connecticut River to Vermont then run back across the bridge to New Hampshire, all in the buff of course.
