The lucky nerds at UC Santa Cruz are now receiving $460,000 in grant funding— because Sony screwed its workers on their overtime compensation. In 2007, employees of the company sued for unpaid overtime hours, and a settlement was reached worth $8.5 million. Inexplicably, some of the money was not collected, so it was donated to UCSC for the computer game design program.
According to the Santa Cruz Sentinel:
UC Santa Cruz freshmen majoring in computer game design will benefit from nearly $460,000 in grant funding stemming from the settlement of a class-action lawsuit involving video gaming employees at Sony.
UCSC will use the money to provide financial aid for students enrolled in a computer game design program in the Baskin School of Engineering, with an emphasis on recruiting diverse candidates along ethnic, socioeconomic and gender lines.
"This gift will allow us to attract the best students in the nation to come to UC Santa Cruz for our cutting-edge computer game design program," said Jim Whitehead, associate professor of computer science, who had a lead role in the design of the computer gaming major at the university.
Earlier this spring, Sony also donated six PlayStation Portable Development Kits to engineering students in the campus' game design studio.
Cheers to the Sony employees for not letting the man get them down. The results of their lawsuit are an investment into the future of video games. And how sad would it be if there were not computer game design majors to create Madden 2015?
