On September 22nd, Nate Miles, 20, was served a restraining order for allegedly physically abusing and sexually assaulting a 19-year-old UConn woman on multiple occasions. That same night, he violated the order by calling the woman at her home – an action that has now cost him dearly.
Yesterday, Miles went before a university review board for his violation, and they found him guilty of breaking the restraining order. As a result, he was expelled from the University of Connecticut, ruining his dreams of playing for the school’s basketball team and one day playing professionally.
His legal guardian, Sean Patterson, offered this statement after the decision was made:
The first thing I would like to say is I would not be having this conversation if I felt Nate was guilty of things he is accused of because I have two daughters of my own,” Patterson said. “If there was one percent of doubt in my mind that Nate was guilty of assaulting a female, I wouldn’t have anything to say. … In my mind, he was railroaded today. It’s unfortunate for everyone involved. I want to add that I have no regrets about having a great relationship with Jim Calhoun and the basketball staff, and am glad to have had Nate be around such a person and staff. Any parent that is lucky enough to have their son play for those guys is a very fortunate person.
It’s sad to hear that Miles’ life is now effectively ruined for something he may or may not have done, but you reap what you sow.
Sadly, for Miles, that’s early retirement from basketball.
