Chemical Spills Are More Exciting Than Chem Labs
A policeman guards the western entrance of Brown as a fan ventilates the building

Everyone dreads or has dreaded chemistry labs, but generally not for fear of hazardous chemical spills.

Brown Hall was evacuated this afternoon due to a methyl acrylate spill on the fifth floor. The Exponent reported that "a puddle of the highly flammable chemical" was just laying on the floor and only discovered after someone noticed the odor.

The police blocked off nearby roads, restricting car access, but students were still free to roam around the outside where policemen guarded each entrance.

Students trying to enter the building for labs were turned away at the doors. "Classes are canceled," perhaps the happiest news one can hear from a law enforcement agent.

Many students hung around the building, with goggles still in hand, discussing the situation with fellow classmates and enjoying their newfound freedom.

The cause of the spill is still unknown. Brown was cleaned up and re-opened by 4 p.m., but a heavy scent of chemical still lingered at the entrance.

Oh, chemicals.
