PETA Pushes Breast Milk On Ben & Jerry's

Hey Gators, know that Ben & Jerry’s across from campus? You know the one...it’s filled with delicious Half Baked cones and cups of Phish Food.

Well, what if those delicious goods were made of breast milk?

That’s the suggestion coming out of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. According to CNN, PETA sent a letter to Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield urging the cofounders to use human breast milk in their products instead of the usual cow’s milk. This would supposedly lessen the suffering of dairy cows, but what about the suffering of consumers? It probably tastes fine and all, but the idea alone is enough to turn someone off of Cherry Garcia for life.

While so far a spokesperson for Ben and Jerry’s has stated that the company will be refraining from the breast milk, PETA stands behind its suggestion:

"The fact that human adults consume huge quantities of dairy products made from milk that was meant for a baby cow just doesn't make sense," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Everyone knows that 'the breast is best,' so Ben & Jerry's could do consumers and cows a big favor by making the switch to breast milk."

Hey, if anyone understands that the breast is best, it’s college students, but let’s keep the breast encounters to late night sack sessions and away from our ice cream cones.

ben and jerry's has made it clear for years that they only use milk taken from cows without the growth hormone that is put in most cows.. generally, cows that are given this hormone are cared for less than those that are not given the growth hormone. in other words, "growth hormone=bad" for humans and cows, therefore it can be assumed that cows that don't get it are being taken care of with lots of love. granted, that's not always the case, but i think that ben and jerry's have already done what they can to ensure that their ice cream doesn't suck balls, and they only support happy cow farms. LoL there is a logical mistake on their part by stating "The fact that human adults consume huge quantities of dairy products made from milk that was meant for a baby cow just doesn't make sense,".... There saying that saving milk for baby cows makes, yet milk needed for human babies doesn't make sense.

all cows produe BST and the volume of the BST production is directly correlated to the volume of milk produced. high producing cows have more BST present, regardless if it was supplemeted. Also, there is not a tool or test used to monitor milk in order to screen rBST supplements, because it is a natural hormone. so when companies like Ben and Jerry's say they have rBST free milk is pretty well heresay because they are not on the farms checking to see what the farmers are actally doing.

p.s. some of the healthiest and healthiest cows I have worked with are supplemented with rBST. just some fun facts for ya :-)

a couple points to ponder.
1-shouldn't we be concerned about the steroids, medication, ect that may be in human milk?
2-the movie clockwork orange had a scene that makes you think about this

Humans are the ONLY species that consumes dairy after infancy and the ONLY species that consumes dairy from another species.
All milk is Breast milk so why not use it from humans instead of cows....?

And for the hormone, comment, its not about the hormones, do you realize that females (of any species) only lactate from being pregnant, so every year diary cows are, forcefully, artificially inseminated, impregnated, then have their babies pulled away at birth, (and used for veal) so they milk can be forcefully drained form their bodies for human consumption.

Stop thinking about yourself for one second, and think about the suffering of others, even if it is the suffering of animals.

This is just to get you to think, not an actual suggestion.

At the person above me: chill the **** out. Ben & Jerry's has obviously taken steps to make sure that the milk they use comes from cows that are not abused. That's all we can do, is take STEPS. As more pathways become available, those actually concerned with fair treatement of animals will take steps down those pathways. Until then, we take what we can get, and we push for alternatives. Um... you're point? Wait wait, so because we're the only species that does something... it's wrong? Seriously? Reminds me a little of the logic that went into this statement:

Really? Everybody? Maybe if you say it loud enough, enough times, people will just agree, right? Oh wait, yeah... the 'power of suggestion is just to make people think'. If you want us to think, make logical arguments, don't just state things like "cows milk was MEANT for baby cows". Now you've gotten into the 'meaning' of things... and I presume cow meat was meant for...what, nothing? So no animal meat is ever 'meant' to be food? So we should round up all the animals that feed on other animals, because it wasn't 'meant' for them? It's sad when the logical outcome of arguments FOR animal rights becomes something entirely unnatural. You have a strong point PETA about animal abuse... but when you start wavering into such asinine 'everybody-just-understands' logic like this, or the 'meaning' of things, you're on shaky ground.
