Pi Lam brothers will lose the privilege of participating in Fall 2007 Recruitment activities but fortunately won’t face criminal charges. Instead, they’ll have to deal with UF Office of Judicial Affairs.
Alligator covered the story in their Thursday issue, but it didn’t take long before a greek loyalist came to the defense of Pi Lam brothers.
Patrick Duffy, President of Pi Kappa Alpha wrote in Saturday’s Alligator:
Does it seem a little ridiculous to anyone else that the Alligator is condemning other students for lighting up and boozing? Pi Lam had a few bongs and some beer. The brothers weren't mainlining black tar heroin while swigging moonshine they brewed in a bathtub.Duffy argued that Alligator is “seemingly endlessly concerned with the missteps of the greek community,” and that other UF students engage in the same types of behaviors as greeks do without the damaging publicity.
For better or for worse, though, greek organizations have a public presence, and the media is more likely to publicize their pesky run-ins with the po-po.
It's a valiant effort on behalf of the Pike Prez, but with the mischief Pike has been known to stir up on its own, are they really helping the cause?
