If it was not controversial before, an email sent to all UF students yesterday apologizing for a film's promotional phrase has definitely solidified the incident into the collective campus mind.
The movie is "Obsession" and was shown two weeks ago.
The phrase of course is "Radical Islam Wants You Dead" and was posted around campus as an advertisement for the film.
Maybe the phrase should have been changed to "radical people want you dead"? Then it could include radical Islams, desperate muggers, mentally ill serial-killers, the tabloid version of Britney Spears and even radical Christians.
It is a touchy subject. Muslims in America have been stereotyped and badgered fervently since 9/11. Islam is the new black. Radical Islam is the new McCarthy-era red scare.
So were the people who tore down the "Radical Islam Wants You Dead" posters radical Muslims themselves or just offended students? Islam On Campus' website outlines the events from the initial invitation to the eventual apology letter.
In other news, evangelists on Turlington continue to call students whores. One said that he "respected professional hookers who sell their bodies" more then the "swindling college students" who surrounded him.
Ah, religion -- why can't it all end up in delicious food and soothing music for UF students like it does with the Hare Krishnas?
