The Daily Show's Aasif Mandvi Speaks at the University of Alaska

The self-described “brown man” of The Daily Show showed up to a University of Alaska event this Friday to discuss life behind the fake news curtain. His talk was more stand-up than lecture as he shared stories between clips projected on screen of his "reports."

The most revealing part of the talk was when Mandvi started talking about what it’s like to pursue that “authentic moment,” which he describes as when the person that’s being interview slowly realizes that they’re actually the joke. This can be seen in nearly any “Daily Show” special report, like when a correspondent gets a spammer to refuse to give out their personal e-mail, or forces a die-hard republican admit that Bristol Palin had the “choice” to keep the baby. It’s a moment that makes people admit their biases freely. Borat did the same kind of thing under the guise of cluelessness, but the Daily Show correspondents are usually much more subtle with their mind games.

Alaskan’s peppered Mandvi with questions during the Q and A, ranging from the reasonable, (“Did you feel weird making Sarah Palin jokes in Alaska?”) to the ridiculous, (“Is Samantha Bee hot?”) And one girl reportedly dressed up like a “puritanical cheerleader” (whatever that means) proceeded to ramble and flirt with Mandvi until he cut her off. As he was leaving, many felt Alaska was embarrassed by the antics. As one woman put it, “"Man, that made us all look like idiots." Hey, at least it wasn’t on camera.
