UF Weekend Round-Up

UF Weekend Round-Up
Kicking ass, one blocked kick at a time.

While you were getting hammered all weekend, there were interesting events going on all around Gainesville.

On Friday, IRHA's attempts to break the world record for largest water balloon fight failed. It was short by about 300 people. On the upside, they were able to raise $1,600 for the American Cancer Society and fun was had. You can go here to see a slideshow of the fight and here to see a video.

On Saturday, Alicia Silverstone was in town at the “Early Voting for Change” event to support Barack Obama who she said reminds her of a really amazing father. The "Clueless" star answered questions and took pictures with campaign volunteers. The full scoop is here, including information on where she is going next in Florida.

If you want to catch all the highlights from the weekend's homecoming parade and Gator Growl show, you can check them out at the Alligator. Among the more interesting moments was a student proposing to his girlfriend on the field during the pep rally.

Gator Growl's producer, Michael Jordan, attributed the low turnout, which was 10,000 people less than last year, to the economy and bad weather. I have another theory.

First of all, the weather on Friday was fabulous. Not that it matters, because tickets are pre-sold so everyone that wanted to go bought their tickets beforehand. Secondly, you can't claim that people don't want to spend $15 on a show when Seinfeld sold out not one, but two shows here last semester. And those tickets were upwards of $70. This brings me to my next point, Gator Growl used to be fresh. We've had people like Dane Cook, Jay Leno, and Bill Cosby in the past. This year we got some lame ass comedian that no one's ever heard of and a band that's best known for "Fly Like an Eagle" which was covered by Seal for Space Jam.

Step up your game, Gator Growl organizers, and stop making excuses.

Finally, in sports news, UF slaughtered Kentucky at our homecoming game 63-5. It's not even fair.
