Welcome (or not) to Purdue, BYOB

Welcome (or not) to Purdue, BYOB

This weekend was more dull than usual for many party-goers. As of the end of fall break, the new BYOB rules are to be enforced.

For those students under 21, it will be harder than ever do drink underage at fraternity houses. The new rules state that attendants 21 years of age and older may bring either 6 12oz. beers, or 4 12oz. wine coolers, which are to be checked in upon entering the houses. Once the owner wants one of their drinks, they must turn in their number corresponding to their alcohol and will receive one at a time.

Attendants cannot supply minors alcohol, nor may they bring hard liquor to any function. Of course many students are not in favor of the BYOB rules, and many including myself do not see how these rules can really be enforced. We all see (and definitely hope) ways to get around the new rules, although it will be up to the fraternities whether or not they want to enforce BYOB, and take the risks of getting caught by either the Lower Board or the Excise.

From a personal perspective, I am stoked to be 21 and not have to worry about BYOB! It really has to suck for the minors, but I think many agree that this is probably only a temporary event.  Since these aren't really 'new' rules, many wonder how long these rules can really stick around. We're college kids; we will find ways around everything... It's only a matter of time.
