As if anyone needs even more to discourage them from going to the gym, along come the geniuses at our Rec Center. There might be no money for professors to print out their syllabi, but by God, UF isn’t going to let students get into the top secret area that is the gym without ensuring their identity by having their hands scanned.
No longer is the Gator 1 ID sufficient proof that you are a UF student. Starting this September, hand scanners will be installed in the Student Recreation and Fitness Center. The system will cost between $35,000 to $50,000. Way to budget, UF.
The system is supposed to eliminate the need for students to bring their Gator 1 cards when they go to the gym. I don’t know about you, but the creepiness of having UF store my “hand profile” outweighs the inconvenience of bringing a tiny piece of plastic to the gym. It’s also designed to prevent non-UF students from using our facilities. That’s great, because we have a serious problem with the homeless trying to work off pounds in our rec center.
As soon as the scanners are installed, students will be able to register their hand profiles at the gym and starting next year, incoming students must do so at Gator 1 Central when they pick up their ID cards. Creeeepy.
