Healthy Foods at a BBQ? No, Thanks!

Healthy Foods at a BBQ? No, Thanks!

Now that the summer is officially upon us, backyard BBQs and family get-togethers are inevitable. There is probably no better American tradition than spending part of your summer with embarrassing family members. The amazing food makes it all worthwhile though.

Concerned with the fattening foods served and lack of physical activity at BBQs, UGA experts have come up with healthy alternatives to beloved BBQ staples.

Thanks for the advice, UGA experts, but the food is the best thing about a BBQ. In fact, the food is the whole point of a BBQ. Going for healthy alternatives would just ruin the whole atmosphere. Despite their high-fat content, the burgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob, chips and pretzels are still delicious and fun to eat. There are also salad and watermelon, which are actually healthy. It’s all about having a balance, right?

As far as the lack of physical activity goes, that, again, is what a traditional BBQ is all about. Sitting and talking give family members a chance to catch up with one another. People are so consumed with their busy lives that a family BBQ is the only place for them to hit the brakes and relax. You can’t do that when you’re engaging in physical activity such as swimming or playing ball.

While incorporating healthy food options into a traditional BBQ is a great idea, I think I’ll pass. BBQs are all about high-fat, high-cholesterol foods and I wouldn’t give them up for anything else.

What a load of rot, there's plenty of healthy barbecue recipes out there and also great vegetarian barbecue recipes to choose from. You view point just demonstrates a complete lack of imagination......but don't let me put you off the BBQ! It's still the best way to cook. Posted 06/21/2008 04:23 AMReply
