One down, one to go. From the beginning of the season these two weeks in late October were pivotal to Georgia fans across the country. Having to play LSU and Florida back-to-back far from Athens is an extremely difficult task, but UGA passed the first test with flying colors. Finally, the game so many of us had been waiting for. The Dawgs looked confident from almost everywhere in their 52-38 win.
While most people agree that Matt Stafford was the player who stepped up and took control of the game, it was two other Georgia players that were singled out for their exceptional performances. Tailback Knowshon Moreno and linebacker Darryl Gamble were named SEC Players of the Week.
Knowshon, as usual, put together an impressive game with a touchdown and 163 yards, including a 68 yard run for a touchdown. Not only was it his second longest TD run of his career, it really opened the game up. Seriously, the dude rocked.
But Gamble was my personal favorite, getting us off to the best start possible with an interception he returned for a touchdown on the first play of the game. Gamble isn’t constantly recognized like Moreno and Stafford, and it was nice to see him get such credit. One was great, but when he duplicated his first triumph late in the game to seal the deal, he tied a UGA and SEC record for two interceptions returned for touchdowns in one game.
Three huge plays by these 2 young guys resulted in 21 of our points, and kept the momentum on our side. Against a team like LSU, momentum is almost as important as points. Unfortunately for them (and the rest of the team), they won’t be resting any time soon. They will need every bit of that momentum heading into an ever-impressive Florida team next week. Like I said, one big game down, but let’s not forget that the next one is even bigger.
