Fans Must Be Rich To Enjoy UGA Football

Did you hear? The University of Georgia football team was rated the preseason No.1. But it’s not all touchdowns and tailgates for many fans that won’t get to see the team play… not in person, at least.

Take Elizabeth Vaeth, for example. She donated $2,500 to the UGA athletics program in hopes of getting to buy season tickets. Yes, at Georgia you have to pay the school to get the right to pay for tickets. Quite the system they’ve got going there.

But even worse – the $2,500 wasn’t enough. Not by a long shot.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports:

Last year, a $2,500 donation would have been enough to get them. This year, $2,500 wasn’t in the ballpark.

Just 805 season tickets opened up this year, Georgia associate athletics director for external operations Alan Thomas said. Per Georgia’s system, orders for those seats were filled on the basis of cumulative lifetime contributions. The cutoff turned out to be … $10,651.

Thomas admits the first reaction to that number — more than four times last year’s cutoff — generally was “shock.

Though Vaeth claims she’s just happy that the team is predicted to do so well, it’s still an interesting situation. How is it that only the richest can afford to slap on the body paint, grab a hotdog and watch big men throw each other around.?

Seriously? You might want to check on the rules of getting season tickets. If you have been getting UGA renewable tickets anytime before this year, it only costs you the minimum to get tickets (around $450 for one set in non premium seats). All the people that are trying to jump on the bandwagon are the one's that have to pay the high prices, but that is how it should be. Those of us that have been Dawg fans even in the lesser years are enjoying the same price as last year for our tickets. Posted 08/29/2008 09:42 AMReply

I think it's ridiculous that regular ole people who just straight up love the Bulldogs have NO CHANCE of seeing them because of the alumni regulations. I am graduating from UGA this year. But you know what? My major is JOURNALISM. I'm not going to be making 100,000-200,000 bucks a year. Try 35,000, if I'm lucky. There's no way I'm going to be able to afford a $10,000 "donation" so that I can then pay another few hundred for tickets. It's ridiculous. As an alumni, I'll get shafted just like I am now with student tickets. Posted 08/29/2008 12:18 PMReply

If your pt and donate a little every year the system will work out in your favor. There are a lot of people that only donate when the team is expected to do will. Posted 08/30/2008 02:10 AMReply

Just hold on to your student ID and keep pretending to be a student. You can buy the tickets on Ebay, etc. I've been doing it for about 3 years now. Posted 09/10/2008 1:52 PMReply
