Sex Sprinkled With Witty Humor

Showtime has premiered the UK’s wildly popular Secret Diary of a Call Girl. The show, starring Billie Piper, is best described by its title – Piper plays Hannah by day and Belle de Jour by night - a well-paid, high class London escort.

A little hesitant to watch the show, I couldn’t fight the temptation any longer and I finally gave in to watch the show’s first episode. As the first 22-minute episode finished, I couldn’t get enough of it and spend the rest of my night watching the entire first season. For an English comedy, Secret Diary of a Call Girl was surprisingly a witty, knee slapper. I was expecting a typically dry English comedy and thankfully - this show is anything but.

Based on Belle de Jour's popular novel, The Intimate Adventures of a London Call Girl, the risqué protagonist starts off with an introduction into her daily routine and dishes on how she never eats where she schtupps. Her life is completely compartmentalized in two – she has two separate identities, two separate wardrobes and two separates bedrooms. Contrary to popular belief - the show, not only focuses on her love for her work but on the long, lonely nights and the constant upkeep that the job entails.

The show also introduces her best friend/ex boyfriend Ben who starts the show not knowing of her profession. His sweet, naive nature serves as both the harrowing reminder of what she could've had and as her contrasting opposite.

Now after watching the first season, without hesitation, I give it two thumbs up and urge you all to check it out!
