Skip The Career Fair And Go Drink

Tomorrow is the fall semester career fair for UGA and as usual, teachers have been pressuring students to go and the career center is sending out all kinds of info on it. They always tell you to dress up in business attire--meaning suits or pant-suits. Faculty members promise that you'll meet all the top companies and potentially get that dream job.

The reality is you will be sweating your ass off by the time you get there and when you leave, you'll have nothing but a few free pens to show for it. A lot of top companies come, but unless you're interested in a sales job, there's not much to offer. If you go early enough you may get an interview, but it will most likely not be anything you want--and definitely not your "dream job". I have never met anyone who actually gained something from their experience except maybe a cool new name tag. Seriously, it's a huge waste of time and you will just be walking around awkwardly talking to people you don't care about.

My suggestion: have some fun. Go have a drink downtown--if nothing else it will make your afternoon classes more fun. If it's nice enough, go spend one last afternoon at the pool drinking cheap beer. That's what I plan on doing--get sweaty at the pool, not walking uphill in a Hillary-style pant suit.
