Penn State announced that for the first time in school history, a Nobel prize winner will be a member of the University. Impressive! Dig a little more, though, and one discovers he's only going to be at University Park for about two weeks per year. Not so impressive.
According to Penn State Live, "Barry J. Marshall, co-recipient of the 2005 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, has accepted an appointment as the Francis R. and Helen M. Pentz Professor of Science to further his groundbreaking research in bacterial infections." But as local blogger Veblen points out, this "appointment" isn't such a big deal since Marshall will only be spending about two weeks each year at the school.
"This guy has promised to spend two weeks a year at Penn State spread out over three department in three different colleges at two different locations and at the Huck Institute. This should have little to no intellectual impact on Penn State."
Anyone else interested in only attending school for two weeks? Someone start a Facebook group.
