Barack Obama sealed the deal last night as America's 44th president of the United States of America marking the first Wesleyan alumnus to be president. This past June, Obama received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University following his commencement speech at the University's 176th Commencement ceremony. Obama, an Columbia and Harvard alumnus, filled in for Senator Edward Kennedy P'83, P'08 and shook the hands of each graduate upon receiving their diplomas.
Last night, Wesleyan students gathered throughout campus to watch and celebrate the election. Students congregated at the Usdan center to watch the results come in while discussing politics and drinking complimentary apple cider.
With each state, students cheered voraciously for the future President. Although there were some McCainiacs in the audience, Wesleyan students are for the majority Obama supporters.
Obama's celebration at Grant Park began with the National Anthem. Wesleyan students quickly muted the television and belted out their own rendition of the country's song. Throughout the night, students shouted out words of praise in honor of the country and the president-elect. The night sparked an unprecedented state of patriotism on the Wesleyan campus.
Upon Obama's arrival to the stage, students clapped, cheered, cried and even embraced one another as Obama and his family walked to the podium. Following Obama's victory speech, Government Professor Elvin Lim discussed this historical election. Lim provided his audience with facts that further illuminated the victory.
Following the conclusion of the election results and Obama's victory speech, a night of celebration ensued. Most of the merriment took place outside of Usdan and on Foss Hill. Students sang the "Obama Reggae," danced up a storm, and even launched fire works in honor of the historic moment.
This election marks a victory for the United States, the world and the Wesleyan community. We are proud to support of honorary alumnus and congratulate the Senator on his new role as President of the United States!
