For the last fifteen years, University of Southern Mississippi alum Brett Favre has done the Packers proud, holding records for most NFL touchdown passes, passing yards, pass completions, and most consecutive game starts for a quarterback; leading them to two Super Bowls; and earning an unprecedented three AP MVP Awards, much in the same way that Western Civilization Volume I: To 1715 rocks a student’s world through the fall of Rome, the Crusades, and Renaissance Humanism.
Eventually, the time comes, however, to move on to Western Civilization Volume II. There are the War of 1812, communist Russia, and the World Wars, waiting to be covered. In short, it’s time to pass the torch at the used textbook store to the next student ready to embark on pre-1715 Europe.
Today, Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy and executive vice president and general manager Ted Thompson released a statement saying, "Brett has had a long and storied career in Green Bay, and the Packers owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude for everything he accomplished on the field and for the impact he made in the state. It is with some sadness that we make this announcement, but also with the desire for certainty that will allow us to move the team and organization forward in the most positive way possible.” Only time will tell whether the Packer’s decision to let one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time go will end as fortuitously as second semester European history.
