We know you’re all out of school, but we’re going to attempt to keep you abreast on Terrapin news this summer with a new feature: Ripe Produce. Similar to Fresh Cream, the post will feature local University of Maryland news that’s “ripe for the reading.” Here are six summer stories you must know.
* "Hip Hop hooray...Ho...Hey...Ho" This song takes me back to slap bracelets and side ponytails. Miss the 80s and all the rad and steeler music? You are in luck because Naughty by Nature, Rob Base, Doug E. Fresh, Sugarhill Gang, DJ Kool and Kurtis Blow will be together in concert at the Fresh Fest.
* Who's the boss? Lee Thornton has been named the interim dean of the Philip Merrill College of Journalism, as reported in the Washington Post. This woman sure knows what journalism is all about, as a former CBS News White House correspondent, National Public Radio program host and CNN public affairs program producer, she can surely teach those college kids a thing or two.
* These guys aren't just dumb jocks. The University of Maryland has seen seven of their men's basketball players graduate in the past two years. This achievement is due in part to the dedication of their head coach, Gary Williams, and the school's Academic Support Unit. Way to go fellas!
* Hate chickens? Well fear the feathers no longer. Researchers at the University of Maryland's School of Medicine are close to discovering a vaccine for the bird flu, which has killed over 240 people since 2003.
* Got to love a hot college babe! Check out College Humor's ever popular Cute College Girl to see what cute college girls attend UMCP! Score!
* Athletics may fall short this upcoming school year at Maryland. The Citadel has seized Larry Leckonby as their new athletic director, according to the Post and Courier. Leckonby is UMPC's current senior associate athletic director for business and finance. Hope none of Maryland's athletic checks bounce without Leckonby there!
