Scranton, Pennsylvania is home to many wonderful things -- Dunder Mifflin, the Houdini Museum and of course, Scranton University where this year’s Universal Cheerleaders Association Camp was held. University of Delaware’s hysterically wimpy mascot, YouDee the fighting Blue Hen, took home two first place titles this year.
The not-so-fearsome mascot was inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame two years ago and continues to excite UD fans at games and competitions. YouDee shook his tail feathers and got the UCA crowds so pumped that he flew away with the College Spirit Award and the College Spirit Camp Leadership Award.
According to Sharon Harris, the coordinator of the mascot program, the mascots themselves and the camp instructors have to make the nail-biting decision of choosing winners for the highly coveted awards.
“The UD mascot team spent four days at the UCA Camp, and during this time the team members learn everything needed to know about being a collegiate mascot performer,” Harris said. “The camp ends with the mascot performers participating in a Mascot Follies for all camp students, as well as parents and friends.”
With his Hall of Fame status and list of awards --you would think he would have his hand claw prints on display at the university. The UD Mascot Program is probably working diligently to get their superstar the attention he deserves so he can spread his wings and fly.
