Depression Upgraded To Tropical Storm Paloma, University of Miami In The Clear... For Now

I bet with all this election obsession, you forgot it was still hurricane season for three more weeks. As a little reminder that deadly weather is still possible despite Obama’s promise of Hope and Change, Tropical Depression 17 became Tropical Storm Paloma this morning.

The storm formed off the coast of Nicaragua and the Hurricane Center forecasts that Paloma could become a Category 1 hurricane by Friday or Saturday.

At the moment, the slow-moving Paloma looks like it's headed towards Cuba, but I know what you’re all thinking. What about America??

"It's too early to say what kind of impact this will have on Florida. The current track would keep it a good distance south of Florida," hurricane specialist Jack Beven said this morning.

The cone of possibility as it is drawn brushes South Florida in the Keys, he said. But a better forecast will come in a couple of days, when the slow-moving storm has progressed.

University of Miami students have little to worry about. It seems this thing will steer clear. With a successful election process and relatively storm-free fall, Florida really is getting lucky these days.
