Jewish college students have a new mission (you know, other than finding a nice Jewish spouse with which to produce nice Jewish children): Getting their grandparents in Florida to vote for Obama.
The Jewish Council for Education and Research, a new pro-Obama political action committee, has created the perfect way to do this with The Great Schlep.
The idea is that hundreds of young Jewish people will head south Columbus Day weekend (Oct. 10-13) to schmooze their grandparents away from McCain and towards Obama. See, while grandparents are good for free food and excess praise, they’re also pretty important in the election. Older Floridian Jews make up about 5 percent of the voters in Florida, a swing state with 27 electoral college votes. And it is this demographic that likely voted for Ralph Nader on accident instead of Al Gore eight years ago, so they can use all the help they can get.
So how’s a good grandkid supposed to persuade the older crowd? Columnist Joel Stein explains in the Sun-Sentinel how he won over his own grandma:
To persuade Mama Ann to vote for Obama, I used many of the talking points suggested to me by Great Schlep organizer Mik Moore. These included the fact that Obama went to Columbia and Harvard, and McCain got bad grades in college; that Obama has been criticized by the Rev. Jesse Jackson, and that Obama ran the business side of his campaign better than any other candidate. I did not know that I could be so racially offended by my own people.
Stereotypes may be wrong, but man do they work.
And even if they don’t work, all is not lost. The Great Schlep will also include a bar night for all the young Jews, which as Stein says, “may do more to repopulate the world’s Jews than the creation of Israel.”
Obama: a step in the right direction for getting Jewish guys laid.
