Things are getting a little rough for John McCain these days. A new poll by Arizona State University shows McCain may not even be able to count on his home state.
Of course the ASU poll still shows a McCain lead in Arizona, but that lead is slight: 46 percent of registered voters in the state support McCain while 44 percent support Obama, leaving 9 percent undecided. Yes, the Republicans are ahead, but a month ago they were leading by seven points, now just a measly two.
Johnny isn’t worried though. The Arizona Republic reports:
"We're doing fine in Arizona," said Wes Gullett, co-chairman of the McCain's Arizona campaign. "We're not going to win by 30 points, but we're going to do fine. We're going to win."
I know the co-chairman of the campaign has to be confident, but I wouldn’t speak too soon. The guy’s only two points ahead, and did I mention the poll has a 3-percentage-point margin of error. That could go either way.
Meanwhile, neither candidate is really spending any money in the area, relying only on national cable ads that happen to broadcast there as well. Sorry Arizona, unless you change your name to Virginia, Pennsylvania or Florida, no one really cares.
