Bowman Bowing out

Bowman Bowing out
Michigan men's swimming coach Bob Bowman is stepping down.  In his four seasons as head coach, Bowman compiled a 30-8-1 record in dual meets. He also went 21-1-1 against Big Ten opponents.
Bowman's most notable contribution to the program has certainly been Michael Phelps. The gold medalist was just one of the many Olympians who followed Bowman when he came from the North Baltimore Aquatic Club to Michigan.
Michael Phelps may have enjoyed his time in A2 but, according to the Detroit Free Press, Phelps will be heading back to Maryland. Let's be honest: Michael Phelps didn't come here for Michigan's high academic standards so his leaving is no big surprise.
Besides being an excellent swimmer, what else did Phelps contribute to Michigan? He was a guest judge at a Mock Rock. Wow. I was hoping he'd use his fame as an Olympic Gold Medal winner to do more for the community.  Other Michigan athletes are held to high standards of service and giving back. I don't have a record of everything Michael did or didn't do while in Ann Arbor, but I doubt his overwhelming contribution to the community will be missed when he heads back to Maryland.
The most media coverage outside of swimming he received while in town was just after he received his D.U.I. in 2004.
Either way, I'm proud to say that Michael Phelps was a Wolverine. I'll root him on during the Olympics and smile knowing that underneath his Red, White and Blue is a little Maize.

"Ann Arbor, Michigan when coach Bob Bowman was hired to run the University of Michigan's swimming program. Because of Phelps's endorsements, he is unable to swim for the Wolverines. However, he is one of their coaches." - Wikipedia Posted 04/18/2008 4:40 PMReply
