Columbia Rocks the Vote

Columbia Rocks the Vote

It's almost October, and the only thing scarier than the ghosts and ghouls of Halloween is the terrifying realization that you've missed the voter registration or absentee ballot deadline. Fortunately, it's not too late yet, but deadlines are looming this week and next week, so you better act fast. This election promises to be huge, and -- no matter what your political persuasion -- you don't want to be left out!

If you're a Columbia student or happen to be in the Morningside area, the CPU will be tabling on College Walk all week and would love to help you get registered. You can register to vote here; google your state's board of elections to apply for an absentee ballot if you aren't able to go home to vote.

Other things to keep in mind: In most states, you can vote as long as you've been a resident for 30 days, which means you can vote in your home state or the state where you go to school. If you are from Louisiana, Michigan, Illinois, Tennessee, or Nevada, then you are unfortunately a marooned voter -- you have to either register in person or vote in person. (In other words, you can't register by mail AND vote absentee.)

I know it's a little complicated and more than a little annoying, but at least you won't be kicking yourself if your preferred candidate loses by a narrow margin -- in this contentious election, every vote matters!
