Congressman Sells Out, Seeks Gasoline Tax
Congressman John Dingell, the dumbass. Tuesday in Ann Arbor during a town hall style meeting at Pioneer High School he proposed a 50 cent per gallon tax on gasoline. It was a nice move to gain favor from the environmentalists who have long opposed him because of his automobile ties. The genius is also supporting a bill relating to miles per gallon on cars, one that doesn’t raise fuel standards to the extent that the activists and members of his own party would like. I can’t see how anyone on campus is going to be happy about an extra 8 bucks at the station, and the environment activists still aren’t satisfied with his proposals. Don’t expect to see this guy re-elected in a college-friendly platform.

Maybe he should put a tax on paper too, seeing as how it both results in a decrease of CO2 and has absolutely no alternative. Should we start killing more cows and using their skin for scroll paper like in the old days? My guess is PETA will have something to say about that. Trying to please everyone is impossible, someone tell this jerk to pick a side and stick with it.

What's with the knee-jerk reaction to a gasoline tax? Plenty of economists believe that such a policy would be best for the environment in the long run.

Gasoline taxes may not make Dingell popular, but for that very reason it's a politically courageous move.

@ Anonymous: I don't think the reaction is as much to the gasoline tax as Dingell's trying to have it both ways by courting environ-friendly sentiment with the gas tax but refusing to raise gas standards... Posted 08/08/2007 7:42 PMReply
