One last weather-related post and I swear I'm done ... until tomorrow probably. But seriously, how pissed were you when you got out of bed this morning, looked out your window into the winter wonderland, clicked onto Penn State Live and saw ... nothing. Meaning, we had school. Wish you went to one of those commonwealth campuses now don't ya?
I'm not the only one begging for a day off because of this snow. In her blog today, Collegian Editor in Chief Devon Lash urged the Office of the Physical Plant (OPP) to take a day off from clearing snow. Could have fooled me, I thought they were off all week.
So after the disaster that campus was for the past three days, a story about the snow clearing was bound to appear in today's Collegian. And sure enough, there is was, with some real hard hitting reporting from Lauren Boyer, who e-mailed the OPP and just took them at their word:
"[Paul] Ruskin wrote in a e-mail that during each snowfall," said Boyer's piece, "221 university workers clear snow from 17,000 parking spaces, about 11,000 doorways, 32 miles of paved roads and 25 miles of walkways on campus."
Great! But guess what, the parking lot out by the BJC is still a ****ing mess, and I saw at least two people fall on their ass today. So, maybe not all those 25 miles of walkways were cleared.
Additionally, a letter to the editor today from Penn State freshman Rachael McKelvey pointed out that paths were anything but clear yesterday, even in the middle of the afternoon:
"As I walked home around 3 p.m. it was as if I were carving the first path through the Appalachian Trail; I was walking through about six to eight inches of snow on sidewalks. The plow on the street was also plowing onto the sidewalks, thus causing me to get doused with snow and have to continue my walk home through mush, slush and an additional inch or two."
Bet they'll use this as an excuse to raise tuition. Oops, too late.
