Mary Sue Wants to Feed on Aborted Baby Embryos

Mary Sue Wants to Feed on Aborted Baby Embryos

Alright, so the title might be a slight stretch, but how many interesting ways are there to bring up Proposal 2? Mary Sue Coleman spoke the other day supporting the proposal and the positive effects it could have for the state of Michigan as well as the University. Some of you may be asking “Wait, Proposal 2? Didn’t we shoot that down two years ago? Are unborn babies looking for affirmative action now?” No, coincidentally enough Proposal 2 on this year’s ballot has been among the most talked about, similar to the affirmative action Proposal 2 in 2006. I apologize to those who care more about medical marijuana (Proposal 1) than stem cell research, your day will come. But let’s take a look at the writing:

A PROPOSAL TO AMEND THE STATE CONSTITUTION TO ADDRESS HUMAN EMBRYO AND HUMAN EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH IN MICHIGAN

The proposed constitutional amendment would:

• Expand use of human embryos for any research permitted under federal law subject to the following limits: the embryos

        – are created for fertility treatment purposes;
        – are not suitable for implantation or are in excess of clinical needs;
        – would be discarded unless used for research;
        – were donated by the person seeking fertility treatment.

• Provide that stem cells cannot be taken from human embryos more than 14 days after cell division begins.

• Prohibit any person from selling or purchasing human embryos for stem cell research.

• Prohibit state and local laws that prevent, restrict or discourage stem cell research, future therapies and cures.

So there you have the proposal, it seems the “would be discarded unless used for research” is a pretty clear indicator that this is a case of one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Oh, and that treasure has the potential to save thousands if not millions of lives, just a slight bonus. For those of you against Proposal 2 because you’re pro-life, well, you may want to rethink what that actually means. If you’re still uncomfortable just think of the embryos as organ donors.

Being against Prop 2 doesn't protect any embryos, it just sends them to the garbage instead of to life-saving research labs.

I completely agree with you: "One man's trash is another's treasure." Embryos being discarded anyway can cure tens of diseases? Hell yeah, vote YES on 2.

Leave Stem Cells to California. Michigan should be investing in alternative energy. Posted 10/14/2008 2:08 PMReply

THANK YOU AHOR.

By the way, if you are against Prop 2, you need to seriously start considering your position on fertility clinics. They discard more "human life" than abortion clinics.

Also, please refrain from using any treatments developed from embryonic stem cell research. It's not really moral to vote for against it, get old, and use it to cure your Parkinson's.

yeah that's really true about the similarities between an organ donor and an embryo. Posted 10/14/2008 5:33 PMReply

• Proposal 2 Does NOT legalize Embryonic Stem Cell Research in Michigan, because it is already legal. In fact U-M in Ann Arbor has one of the largest embryonic stem cell research facilities in the nation.

• Proposal 2 Authorizes Unrestricted Science/Research on Human Embryo’s, subject only to Federal Restrictions (Currently no restrictions exist). The Fed’s stance “Anything Goes for Embryos”. An Embryo is defined as the period between conception and about 7-8 weeks. This measure would allow unrestricted science during this timeframe on the Embryo. This could include the radical gene splicing research which occurs around the world, mixing human and animal DNA to create Hybrids. This proposal would create one “Human Race” to serve another “Human Race” haven’t we already been there in History and rejected it as evil?

• Proposal 2 does not authorize immediate funding. But, in states where this initiative has passed, it has resulted in increased taxes. In fact the “Yes” Campaign Chairman has stated that not only must this research be unleashed, but it must also be publically funded. So if this passes, they will be in line next year for a line item in the state budget. So yes in the end it will cost taxpayers.

• Proposal 2 opens the door for the trafficking of Cloned Human Embryo’s into our state for research.

• Proposal 2 has a provision down near the end which would allow researchers to ignore any State or Local Law they feel prevents, obstructs, restricts or even discourages Stem Cell Research. Once again, we will be turning all control over to the Fed’s, our wonderful congress, senate & president and all the lobbyist’s who influence their decisions. Do we really want to turn control of Michigan’s laws over to the Fed’s???

Currently we have a law on the books which prohibits research on live human Embryos. This law was passed by a Democrat led Legislature and signed into law by then Gov. William Milliken to proclaim that Human Embryos would not be reduced to Lab Rats.

Embryonic Stem Cell Research is dead end science. Even the Pioneer of Stem Cell & Embryonic Stem cell research James Thompson is abandoning Embryonic Stem Cell Research. This was announced at the world stem cell summit last week: http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=797226

Hey ... thanks for the info. Regardless of ones' stance on this issue ... Proposal 2 looks like a bad law for our state. Not only that, 'looks like the recent developments with iPS cells makes embryonic stem cell research unnecessary. Posted 10/25/2008 10:56 PMReply

These embryos are humans too. When do they have a say in the use of their bodies for research? I would think they would like to be adopted and implanted in a willing woman, which has happened hundreds of times now, if not more. And the IVF clinics generating the embryos are only thinking of convenience when they generate excess embryos. How about the policy, one embryo, one pregnancy so that human life does not even have the chance to be thrown out. Posted 11/14/2008 2:21 PMReply
