Michigan Now has $40K Video Game Archive for "Research"

I’m exhausted from Greek stuff after this past week, so I figured it was time to switch to geek. Har har har. Anyways, the latest ridiculous thing our university has spent money on is a $40,000 archive that is dedicated to the “academic study of video games.” Right.

The archive is on the second floor of the Duderstadt Center, and God help me if I have one bit of a clue where that is. It has 20 video game systems and over 400 games, which are available for students to use (in extremely limited hours of 1-4pm). No, you can’t rent them like you can get free movies at the library, which would be awesome, so you’ll have to be content with going to play them at the center.

Wait, who exactly would go to this place to play games? Anyone who’s a big enough nerd to want to probably already is holed up in their rooms cuddling their Xbox 360 anyways and won’t ever hear about this new Mecca that’s been built for them.

But alas, I’m forgetting the primary reason the center was created: research.

Director of the Art, Architecture and Engineering Library Catherine Soehner said the library wanted to support “academic inquiry including but not limited to programming and technology, artistic and literary expression, social and cultural impact, instruction and education.”

So yeah, this project received full support from anyone that heard about it, because as we all know, our school and money are bitter enemies, and must be separated from each other at all costs.

The archive's annual budget, $10,000, will allow it to acquire just over a dozen games a month if no other equipment is purchased.

A dozen games a month? There are maybe like six good ones that come out, at most, and if they want to buy games for the old systems, I’m sure you can find any of them on Ebay for like 45 cents. Oh well, I guess it’s cool people actually think video games are meaningful part of pop culture and it’s nice to see our University leading the charge to legitimize them. I’m actually not being sarcastic. Wow. I know.
