Princeton University is having a rough year.
First, they lost the top spot on the US News & World Report’s college rankings to longtime rival Harvard, and now, Verizon wants nothing to do with them.
According to Princeton’s Office of Information Technology, Verizon started blocking all emails sent from Princeton accounts yesterday. The reason is unknown, but the Ivy League university responded by posting a bulletin on their helpdesk that declares the situation to be an “emergency.”
The unedited bulletin from Princeton’s OIT website reads:
Title: Verizon blocking Princeton emails. Updated 3:45pm.
Status: Unscheduled
Start/End Time: Emergency
Cause: Verizon is currently blocking emails sent from Princeton email accounts. OIT is working on removing Princeton from Verizon's block lists. Verizon Online Security has determined that normal e-mail delivery should be restored within 72 hrs.
Systems Affected: Princeton email sent to Verizon email addresses.
72 hours to remove a domain name from a blacklist? Doesn’t sound like Verizon thinks this is much of an emergency – at all.
In fact, one could argue that the telecommunications supergiant is having fun with Princeton by taking their sweet, sweet time. Verizon’s Online Security team must be run by Harvard alumni or Princeton rejects.
