I remember the college application process. I wanted to go to a bigger school, because I had experienced the small school environment (relatively small, 1300ish). I enjoyed the sense of community that you only get at a small school. I recognized almost everyone, knew most of their names. As nice as it was to have that sense of community, it also had its downsides—relatively small pool of people to choose from in terms of friends, love interests; you know the deal. As I’m sure you know, the place “where everybody knows your name” (Cheers reference anyone), can become a rather heated venue for the spreading of rumors.

As I said before, I wanted a bigger school. I wanted the college experience, but I also wanted a sense of independence more readily associated with the large university. The idea of always being surrounded by new faces was enticing. As you could imagine, I ended up coming to BU, and surprisingly, I discovered that the undergraduate student body of almost nineteen thousand was a lot smaller than I initially imagined it to be.

You’d be surprised how small the rather monstrous student body can be. Maybe it’s just the part of campus I lived in, or the group of people that I associate with, but I find that separate groups of friends are constantly crossing paths until it’s one giant mass of people. With everyone knowing somebody else, the environment is just right for the spreading of rumors.

Let me discuss “the” rumor of the semester. Since the third week of school I have been hearing a rumor about a super-freshman. This unknown super-freshmen has the endurance of a team of oxen, the voracious appetite of ravenous hyenas.

As I do not want to become involved in scandal, I will maintain the anonymity of all parties involved.

It is said that a certain group of students at BU threw a party and a certain freshman girl set a seemingly unachievable goal: to fornicate with every member of this specific group of males (numbering somewhere between fifteen to twenty).

Legend has it that said girl propped herself up on a bed and presented the men with her offer. The group proceeded to line up, waiting their turn in this over-the-top exercise of Dionysian morality.

Now, I do not know how true this rumor is; however, I can tell you that I’ve had multiple people tell me this story, with continuity that is almost word for word. Many question the mystery girl’s ability to perform such a task—they also question her dignity and most often her motivation.

It seems unreal, but it could have happened. Right?

With all this being said, how do these rumors begin and if they’re true, how does everyone know about them?
