Sam McGuffie: Will He Stay or Will He Go?

Sam McGuffie: Will He Stay or Will He Go?

It has recently been made known by Rich Rodriguez that Sam McGuffie is among those considering transfer after his absence from the team’s end of the year banquet. He is believed to be looking at schools close to home in Texas in order to be closer to his family, particularly his younger brother. He is also coming off three concussions in one Big Ten season.

It’s hard to be mad at McGuffie in this situation, he was always known as a very nice, quiet kid. He was considering dropping his commitment last year but made the decision to stick with Michigan after Lloyd Carr left, when a lot of players, let alone recruits, decided to go elsewhere. McGuffie showed great potential during the first half of the season with two games rushing for 100+ yards and two others for 70+ yards. He was also a great passing threat coming out of the backfield. There will be very few bitter feelings toward him should indeed decide to go back home to Texas. He might be better suited with an explosive Big 12 offense that doesn’t have to worry about getting hit by Big 10 linemen.

I’ve heard people say that if he added 15-20 pounds of muscle this off-season, he’d be better able to take the hits. However, if it’s a recurrent concussion issue, I don’t think that adding muscle is going to solve a head injury, but why not give him a medical redshirt this season?

If McGuffie leaves, Michigan should be able to manage in the backfield, but I will miss watching his Waterboy running style. Brandon Minor and Carlos Brown will be back for another season and Michael Shaw had some good moments last year. Rich Rodriguez is also bringing in running backs Fitzgerald Toussaint, Vincent Smith & Teric Jones in the 2009 recruiting class.

What do people think? Will McGuffie stay or will he go?

Update 12/12: McGuffie has officially received his release from Michigan. He will likely transfer to Texas A&M, though TCU and Texas Tech are other options. I wish him the best of luck in the future, so long as it's not against Michigan.

people should get the full story first before making judgements on the kid. I'm not saying that I do know what all is factoring into his decision, but I'm sure it's not a simple choice that he's just going to breeze over. Give the kid a break. He is a humble guy and definitely did not ask for all of the hype and grandiose expectations. We'll be fine without him, but we shouldn't feel like we need to attack him if he does leave. McGuffie reminds me a lot of Justin Fargas when he was a frosh at UM... Fargas suffered a season-ending leg injury his first year, had to redshirt his soph year, then came back as a DB his junior year... After transferring to USC, he only got on the field in his fifth year... But that one year was enough to get drafted, and I'm glad things have worked out for him in the NFL...

Like Fargas, McGuffie prolly needs 5 years to develop physically into an NFL-ready RB...

I'm sure that he will make the decision he needs to with his family. It says something about someone if they make these kind of decisions based on other people. Sam, you are such a nice guy and we will miss you! Posted 12/10/2008 11:52 AMReply

he could become the greatest RB ever at michigan. Him leaving would be a huge loss. He is a Morris, Lytle and Hart wraped in one package. What has happened at Michigan when we loose our #1 prize recruit in 1 year??!! This is sick!!! Posted 12/10/2008 11:03 PMReply

^ You're an idiot. He is not even remotely the same kind of player as Hart. He is an open field running back made for gaps, not a power running back like Hart who made plenty of yards after contact. He has to put on a lot of size and retain the same elusiveness while being able to break a tackle in order to be the "greatest" RB ever at Michigan. Oh and you mean lose not "loose". Let's remember, even though he's a football star, he's still a kid. If a close member of his family dies, it still sucks. Posted 12/11/2008 12:44 PMReply

Bitch, he aint no idiot, motha ****ca! you da idiot bro. Real Talk, Unfortunately, losing McGuffie isn't a big loss at all, Minor, Toussaint, Shaw, then Hart in 2011...we're fine, sad to see him go, wish him the best of luck at Texas A&M.

GO BLUE!

pretty sick comments from a couple people here. Here is a kid taking responsibility and going home to take care of his little brother, something that should be commended, not criticized. I love MI football as much as anyone and there is no doubt this is a big loss for the program, but there are more important things in life than football. Posted 12/12/2008 01:25 AMReply

I know Sam, I don't know why he might be thinking of leaving, but something has happened. I will say this much, if the team was better, i think Sam Would have exploded on the College Scene. Sad, Sad. Maybe this move back to Texas is better, who knows, I just wish him well. Posted 12/12/2008 05:59 AMReply

It's a good thing for McGuffie to leave. He is a good player and deserves to start somewhere else. I think Michael Shaw will actually be better. Shaw has the complete package. Posted 12/12/2008 10:07 AMReply
