South Quad Soulja Boy Superman Shirts Criticized by Campus “Hoes!”

South Quad Soulja Boy Superman Shirts Criticized by Campus “Hoes!”
Superman that ... dog?

After weeks of terrible reporting from the Michigan Daily, they’ve finally given OTR something to work with. Recently, South Quad sold T-Shirts to their residents with the Superman logo in front, and “Superman that …” on the back. Sexual Assault Prevention Awareness Center, University Housing and The F-Word (feminists) all denounced the T-shirts and successfully pushed for a stop to production.

Sensitivity, sensitivity, sensitivity. What’s the world coming to when the mothers of 10 year-olds in a ballet class are more liberal than a college campus? The shirt doesn’t even say “ho” on the back, it’s just a “…”, you could fit anything in there. Maybe it could imply “Superman that Lex Luther” and thus provide an inspiring message of saving the world. How about “Superman that WMD” and portray a political message to sling the world’s nuclear missiles into space?

This is a huge overreaction. There are lyrics in songs and phrases on shirts that are far more degrading to women than the implication of sticking a blanket on her back with special glue. And for all we know, the Soulja Boy Ho may have given consent to be Supermanned, nobody even bothered to ask.

There are new and more appropriate shirts presently in production, this time the back states “Superman that SAPAC Ho!” They will be sold in the Union for $5 each.

Asian Student "Yers, I aem so exzitted. But I loose mine at age of 12."
Honors Student 2 "How did you get into the University of Michigan?"
Honors Student 1 "These new shirts are going to make us the most popular girls on campus. Guys will now know that we are up for getting superman'd"
Hot SQuad girl "I'm going to wear it with my Ugg boots and tights."
Honor Student 2 "This is totally going to make all that studying in high school worth while. I knew I could just easily get laid in college. Especially at UM."

the mothers of 10-year-olds are more "liberal" because they don't have a ****ing clue what it means.

and just because there are worse things, doesn't make it OK. just because it would be worse to stab you 20 times, would that make it OK for someone to sodomize you twice? ****

It's just referring to when you hold a baby under its stomach and fly it around the room. That's all the south quad shirts mean. Posted 02/14/2008 4:35 PMReply

@ Anonymous: why the **** are you talking about stabbing people? it's just a word... a word that was not even on the shirt. do you realize the printing of those shirts was stopped because of the word "that"? christ. they were stupid shirts... its the principle that has me pissed. it's not because of "that," it's because everyone knows what the last word is. and it's not just the word, it's the action, and the implication.
people running around in shirts implying "superman that hoe" is not only gross, but degrading.
men will never understand.

@ Anonymous: were you bitching about the song when it came out too, or were you cranking that like every other girl on campus? Posted 02/18/2008 10:39 PMReply

While souljaboy made that song and has every right to sing what he wants--why would we then condone a T shirt design using his words that so blatently promote sexual violence against women? Lets not kid ourselves, we all know the word after "Superman that..." is. Posted 02/22/2008 4:40 PMReply

I mean it's a joke. I don't think that when someone sees the south quad superman shirt, he thinks "hm, that sounds like a great idea, maybe I'll force a drunk girl to deal with it next time I have a party." It doesn't promote sexual violence; it's meaningless humor. Posted 02/22/2008 7:46 PMReply

"meaningless humor"...that really wasn't that funny. I live in South Quad and I didn't buy a t-shirt because i thought they were lame, and I don't like the song. Also, it was two girls and a guy on hall council who came up with the shirt idea in the first place, and it was voted upon by the South Quad residents. However, it's just a pop culture reference, it doesn't really condone violence towards women, so stop being over-sensitive. Final verdict: pretty crappy t-shirt, yes...demeaning towards women, probably not. Posted 02/22/2008 9:34 PMReply

Demeaning towards women, YES. Threatening to women, YES. This isn't a debate over whether it's a shitty song or whether the crap that "Soulja Boy" and his inartistic lackies are singing on the radio is offensive or degrading. The FACT being brought to attention by the INTELLIGENT, EDUCATED, EMPOWERED young women who have raised their voices, both in and out of SAPAC, is that the shirt basically says, "Sexually Assault Women." And then University Housing, which is obligated to protect it's residents and create a safe environment for ALL of its residents, not just privileged white males, condoned this action. This is not about people being "offended," this is about the creation of a HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT created by Housing and its sanctioned executive boards and housing staff. This makes this incident LEGALLY ACTIONABLE SEXUAL HARASSMENT.

So take a step back and think about it. This isn't about "the feminazis being offended." This is about specifically threatening a group of people based on their identity. This is about making young women feel that if they deny a young man sex, he has the right, as communicated by Housing through the printing of these t-shirts, to ejaculate on her back and stick the sheet to her as "punishment." This is not about condoning censorship, this is about Housing honoring a contract that they made with every student: the right to a safe community.

Our reaction is not only there because SAPAC and the F-Word told us we should care. Our reaction is there and it is loud and opinionated because I, we, REFUSE TO BE MADE TO FEEL THREATENED BECAUSE I, WE, WOMEN AND STUDENTS OF THIS UNIVERSITY, HAVE A VAGINA. We want accountability. We want an apology. Not one that apologizes for "offending SOME women," an apology that accepts responsibility for the action and acknowledges that the shirts were THREATENING and SEXUAL HARASSMENT. We want the discussion that SQ promised the young women it serves, one on the t-shirt and what is being done to rectify the damage that it has done, not some bull shit about "the roots of hip-hop." The discussion held was not only a joke, it was a racist cop-out. We DEMAND that the people responsible take the actions necessary to show the young women of the University of Michigan that they will NOT allow this type of incident to happen again.

Raffie and the Wiggles are the ONLY music I, we, the clean, moral Wolverines listen to. I will not STAND HERE while you use such blatant VAGUE REFERENCES to sexual deviant behavior. I'm a man, I'm 40 years old, I live in my PARENT'S BASEMENT. This SHIRT is sickening.

hahahahahaha not that that isn't slightly over the top, but come on, this is one of the dumbest arguments i've ever seen. anyone who's taken a psych class (or has common sense) knows that rational people aren't going to start supermanning bitches just because a song says it. And if you look at (and take the time to decipher it), you'll see that nowhere in the song does it say to ejaculate on a girl's back because she doesn't want to have sex with you. @ CAPS LOCK

supermanning isnt a punishment because a girl wont have sex with you, but rather a reward for a job well done.

sheesh

"And for all we know, the Soulja Boy Ho may have given consent to be Supermanned, nobody even bothered to ask."

As I mentioned in the post- stop assuming the Ho didn't give consent. There are plenty of girls who might get cold (we do live in Michigan) and want a blanket to keep them warm. Maybe she asked for the cape.

It is a song and a piece of pop culture, and as such loses almost all of it's meaning. The same thing happened to Nirvana, who insulted all the people who only listen to music because it was trendy, only to find the entire song singing along to all their songs. Its become a popular phrase, one that reached it's peak during the fall semester of 2007, which is all these people were going for. Now you have gone and blown this out of proportion, as vocal minorities always do. If you were to poll people on campus and ask all the women at this school if they were offended or felt threatened by some freshmen wearing these shirts, the vast majority of them would say no. This really is just the feminazis ruining things so they can get their name out on campus and make people thing they are actually relevant still. Posted 02/26/2008 10:41 AMReply

I lived in South Quad and I want to point out that because DPS never even thought to enter South Quad, we partied harder than the rest of you up in Mojo or anywhere else.

You're just jealous because you got an MIP...oh and you weren't allowed in honors.
