The Best and Worst of the 2008 Michigan Football Season

The Best and Worst of the 2008 Michigan Football Season

You can breathe now, the season is over. There is only room for improvement at this point, the worst is over. And hey, one day you can tell your grandkids "I was there" when Michigan had it's worst season ever... or you can just skip that part.

Let’s start things off positively with the 5 best moments from the 2008 season. Please omit any game factors that may have occurred after these instances, because we are trying to stay positive and we all know what happened.

5) The first half of the game against eventual Big Ten champions Penn State in Happy Valley. Michigan led 17-7 in the second quarter with Brandon Minor rushing for 100 yards and 2 TD’s by halftime.

4) Freshman Martavius Odoms returns a punt for a 73 yard touchdown to get an early 14-0 lead at Purdue.

3) Stevie Brown intercepts Terrelle Pryor’s second pass of the game on OSU’s first drive and returns it 35 yards to the Ohio State red zone.

2) Michigan plays consistent and controlled for a full 60 minutes and knocks off the Minnesota Golden Gophers on the road, 29-6, ending a 5 game losing streak.

1) Michigan comes back from a 19 point deficit against (at that point #9) Wisconsin, scoring the go ahead touchdown on a John Thompson interception.

Thankfully this season is over and the worst moments list can’t grow any larger. There were a lot to choose from, but here are my top 5 worst moments in the 2008 Michigan football season.

5) Michigan turns the ball over 6 times against a weak Notre Dame team. They fumbled 7 times and lost 4 of them, and threw 2 interceptions on the way to a 35-17 loss.

4) Purdue runs a hook and lateral to score the final touchdown with 20 seconds left after Michigan had tied the game on a long drive with 1:20 left in the game.

3) Michigan loses its first game ever to a team from the Mid-America Conference, Toledo, who finished the season with a 3-8 record.

2) Michigan loses to the big three, Michigan State, Notre Dame and Ohio State, in same season for second time ever. If you add Penn State it’s the big four.

1) Michigan loses 9 games en route to its worst record in 129 years of Michigan football

Honorable mentions: Juice Williams has 431 total yards (310 passing and 121 rushing), more yards than any single player has produced in the history of Michigan Stadium. Michigan topped that number only once as a team the entire season, when they had 435 against Minnesota.

The longest active bowl streak of 33-years, held by Michigan, is snapped upon their loss to Purdue, guaranteeing a losing record (Good call Puft)

Now it's time to look at the Michigan basketball team. It might bring some hope to the football program if they can succeed in their second season with a coach we pried away from West Virginia-- one who also had disappointing first year with a young Wolverines squad.

As an avid Um fan (ask Paul, or just look at the goofy bastard next to him in his pic) I would say that I have to agree to the majority of this post. The one thing I would add though is the tremendous impact of the breaking of our bowl-streak, I would say that's number 2 right under the worst season in 129 years.

Also, a general observation, this entire year it wasn't that we were terrible, it was that we always played to the level of our competition (at least for the first half). I feel like this explains why we lost to teams like ND or Toledo yet looked brilliant for, as aforementioned, at least the first half against teams like Wisco and PSU. All we have to do next year is figure out how to be that badass team for 4 quarters and we'll be great because it's not like we don't have a talented team or coaching staff. I'd say next year we're contenders for the Big 10 title and within 3-4 years for the national title
