The Daily Knows How to Capture My Heart

The Daily Knows How to Capture My Heart
Behold, the saddest front page image in Daily history

So on this, the last day of class, the Daily has adequately captured my bittersweet feelings with this image of a jailed kitten. The actual accompanying story is something about how students ditch their pets now that they're moving back home (f***ing idiots, why'd you get a pet in the first place then?), but the picture tells a larger story. It signifies how deeply torn up I am that this is my last day of class ever. Like, ever.

I'm really going to miss class. Studying the names of neurons in the brain until all hours of the night, despite the fact I'm an Econ major and will never, ever need to know this information again. How about taking two entire years of Italian, only to forget absolutely all of it three months later and not know the difference between "bueno" and "buono" today? What about the endless hours of painful Calc lectures trying to decipher what language my GSI was speaking, much less what she was trying to teach? Yeah, those were some good times.

So in case you can't tell, I really won't miss class at all. At all. I've learned a lot in college despite classes, not because of them. It's really sad to look back and realize I've only taken a handful of classes I've actually gotten anything out of, most of them English and none of them Women's Studies. I've always said that I love college, but hate school. The only thing class facilitated effectively was meeting new people, but in terms of actual knowledge? Nu uh. After eighteen credits of Econ I can tell you that price = marginal cost. That's really about it. Maybe that makes me dumb, or maybe that just makes me a dumbass for majoring in something I couldn't care less about. Whatever the case, I know that the first three months of my post-graduation job will likely teach me more than four years of classes here.

So cheers U of M, I really, truly have enjoyed my time here, sarcasm aside. College has been great and I'll miss it, but don't try and act like you've really taught me anything. As I'm studying for my Labor Economics 421 exam right now, I'm reading a passage that says "Education merely proves you are clever, it doesn't accurately showcase your potential or ability." I think that says it all.

PS. This isn't my goodbye post, just a rant about useless classes. You're stuck with me until the end of May.

Dont forget polls are still open!

As a sophomore majoring in English, that makes me feel a little better about my academic career choices. Thanks, JQ, for the comfort.
