Did you know there's an election tomorrow? No, not the primary everyone's talking about, that's weeks away. Nope, tomorrow's the elections for the UPUA. The what you say? Yea, good point.
Maybe you've seen the flyers around campus, or the people campaigning in the HUB or one of your friends joined a Facebook group for a candidate. You're response to this was probably a strong "meh." The point is, last year only about 14% of the student population voted in the election to decide who would be out student leaders. So, when less than 14% of the students vote for you, are you really a leader? But to be fair, the votes were up from 6% the year before!
So tomorrow, Gavin Keirans and his running mate Valarie Russell will win the UPUA presidency (unless they get disqualified for some reason), and I'm not saying this is a bad thing. Yesterday, The Collegian essentially endorsed the duo and really they're the only ones who seem to be qualified. But qualified for what?
I'm sure Valarie and Gavin could argue with me over what they can do to make life for students better, but really the UPUA doesn't do anything to really effect things that truly matter. Gavin and Valarie have some great ideas planned, but I just don't have faith in the organization. For god's sake, they're still "tweaking" the bylaws.
So, go vote tomorrow. Check out the candidates stances in today's Collegian and vote. There's really no excuse, you don't even need to leave your room since you can vote online. Plus, unlike the real presidential election which is decided by our Shadowy Overlords, I think we actually have a say in this one. Actually probably not.
