Facebook and MySpace ruin lives—well, at least the lives of those who foolishly post incriminating pictures and/or objectionable information on their own profiles.
Case and point: Reiko Ohnuma, an associate professor at Dartmouth specializing—and I use that term loosely—in the Buddhist tradition of South Asia, until recently had an open Facebook profile that the Dartlog, one of the finer Ivy news rags, perused at their own discretion.
What they found, of course, was a veritable gold mine of embarrassing, inflammatory material—ranging from admissions of being a fraud to disparaging remarks about her colleagues—that would certainly jeopardize her position at the College if an administrator ever laid eyes on it.
Realizing her monumental misstep, Reiko later closed her profile. However, it was already too late; the Dartlog had enough screenshots to satiate their voyeuristic desires (and ours).
Here are some choice nuggets:
* "Reiko doesn't know how to explain what 'modernity' is & isn't entirely clear herself."
* "(to a facebook friend) 'I'm now going to shamelessly plagiarize your language.'"
* "Where is Wikipedia when you really need it? The Wikipedia article on modernity SUCKS."
* "Yeah, I saw that page already. Thank ****ing God for the Internet."
The next day:
* "Reiko faked it with aplomb."
* "yeah, but i feel like such a fraud...do you think dartmouth parents would be upset about paying $40,000 a year for their children to go here if they knew that certain professors were looking up stuff on Wikipedia and asking for advice from their Facebook friends on the night before the lecture?"
Oh, but it gets worse! The very next day she boasted about becoming the Chair of her department one day and making the “blowhards” jog in place at departmental meetings.
Classy.
Too bad those dreams of aerobic torture will never come to fruition, because the odds of Reiko remaining employed at Dartmouth beyond this semester are firmly stacked against her.

Stumble It

Woe to those new to the internet, the profile is fake. Almost every professor at Dartmouth has his/her own profile and 99% of them are created by students. At Dartmouth, you can make as many email aliases as you want, so all you have to do is temporarily set one to a name that looks somewhat like shorthand for like the person you want to impersonate, i.e. "rohnuma(at)dartmouth.edu" or something. It's common knowledge here that students create and manage them. She probably got it removed by contacting Facebook. They take fake profiles down rather promptly.
